Subject: The sword over Philip Zimmermann’s head is taken down!

I just got off the phone with Phil Dubois, Philip Zimmermann’s (PRZ’s) lead attorney.

At 1000 Pacific Time today (11 Jan 96) the United States Attorney called Phil Dubois to announce that the government of the United States has chosen *not* to indict or prosecute PRZ for the export of the encryption software package Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) by a third party.

The clock runs out this summer, so it’s doubtful that the government will do an about-face and start this entire fiasco in the time remaining.

Those of us who have been involved with the case and the Zimmermann Legal Defense Fund (the ZLDF) rejoice and thank all of you who assisted with time and money.

This doesn’t mean the fight for privacy and sanity on the Internet is finished, only that a particularly ugly chapter is over.

We still need to fight the good fight.

    See you there.

    With smiles all over,

    Michael
