    Philip Zimmermann

    Philip Zimmermann is a freelance software engineering consultant with 20 years experience, specializing in cryptography and data security, data communications, and real-time embedded systems.

    He is the creator of PGP, the most widely used program in the world for email encryption, and is a leading advocate for public access to strong cryptography.

    Clients for his cryptographic skills include Silicon Graphics, TCI, Reuters, Telerate, Hewlett-Packard, Hughes, Destron-Fearing, and other more confidential clients.

    Zimmermann got his bachelor’s in computer science from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton in 1978.

    He is a member of the International Association of Cryptologic Research, the Association for Computing Machinery, Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, the League for Programming Freedom, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

    He was active in the Nuclear Freeze movement, taught classes in military policy, and has been in jail with Daniel Ellsberg and Carl Sagan.
