    Burning Man 1998: Black Rock Rangers

    Sunday morning. Coffee, breakfast, and a nap. Then it’s time to go back out on patrol. My first stop after calling dispatch and being returned to active duty status is the Ranger headquarters, where cold, low batteries are swapped for fresh, warm ones.

    The next few pages will show the sights sorted by topic, rather than the usual chronological narration. Here are some pictures of Ranger life.

    A Ranger takes a nap while on communications duty. Even when asleep, one ear listens to the traffic. (That’s the secret behind the Ranger Paging channel. We’re always on duty. šŸ™‚

    We even had an airborne parachute Ranger this year. Excellent! To protect and to fly.

    Joseph, also known as Ranger b18 (pronounced “baker18”), the Ranger Emergency Services Coƶrdinator, sets direction and tidies up the thoughts about yesterday.

    One of the media groups enters the Ranger compound. Notice the lack of formal attire. One of the best ideas of 1998 was to require the media groups to register and to participate. This group has adapted very well, and is getting lots of enthusiastic coƶperation for it.
