    Sattler’s Hole at McCoy’s rapid…a historical footnote

    Ever wondered how Sattler’s, the hole above Phil’s, originally got its name?

    In the days when the river had not yet been discovered by anyone except a few rafters led by Joe Kowalski, Norbert Sattler, the slalom champion from Austria, was taken down the Ottawa by some Canadian paddlers.

    He dropped into the hole to side-surf and clown around, and the hole was promptly named after him. Nobody knows if he fell in by accident or on purpose. Nor do we know why the hole was called “Sattler’s” and not “Norbert’s”.

    When we met him a few years ago at a kayak race in Mezzana, where he was coaching the South African slalom team (which included Corran Addison!), he did not remember. We took a picture of the guy, and bought him a few drinks, on behalf of the Ottawa paddling crowd.
